Read A Sample of “A Conspiracy of Ravens”

A Conspiracy of Ravens is my new book.

A Conspiracy of Ravens is a thriller that digs into the unrest in the Niger Delta and draws  a connection between it and the Boko Haram insurgency and the Nigerian Civil War. It is the story of Tari, a Niger Delta militant commander and his battle to fight a war he believes in, and that of Alex Randa, a DSS operative tasked with the assignment of stopping him.

When Tomorrow Comes

Tomorrow will come, I’ve been told
To soften this ground so I may with laughter sow
Fine patterns, now to weave; a journey for the bold
She’ll play her medley, knowing neither friend nor foe

She will make us men, free at last from Penury’s snare
Oracle, queen diviner, reader of leaves and cowries
Dangler of lure, she’ll make the rain fall and goad us to dare:
Gallant warriors eager to pay the debts of worldly dowries

But tomorrow has been a runner, skilled and devious
A seductress, eyes afire, irresistible allure
Skin like marble, mind, a rocky wall impervious
Voice like thunder, faking whispers and a manner demure

I have seen her in dreams warmer than sleet
Galloping on a white steed with tail and mane aflurry
Hooves pounding the earth in a sudden fleet
Never slowing or her face showing, always in a hurry

Now she’s fading, fading so fast like a dowager’s youth
Gold crown glinting in the distance, mine to hold if I’d be persistent
I’m running, screaming, calling to her but it’s like I am mute
Seen but never heard or acknowledged despite being consistent

In this raging battle, this bludgeoning race to own her saddle
Time is the foe, laughing hilariously like I am a joke
Light of day is fading, and this epic failure I cannot handle
So I grasp at this dying flame whose embers I must now stoke:

Tomorrow will come, I’ve been told
Not like a frightened dog tucking its tail
But like fonts of neon-lit signs bright and bold
Like a star studded sky without bale

Tomorrow will come like breaking dawn
Slowly eroding the rust of these stickly nightly shadows
Not one tenuous wisp left of sour memories shall I mourn
Or wish ever again to end this journey in the gallows

Bullet for my Valentine

As I watched the increase in the flow of traffic moving towards Madam Adeola’s gift shop, towards the many colourful items now hanging on her shop windows, mostly bright, thick and woollen, I cursed once more for not knowing. Continue reading

Wedding eves make most men, if not all, tense. I was not an exception. I woke up in the claws of trepidation, another young man tying the nuptial noose. Dread and uncertainty lodged in my heart like an unshakable feeling of guilt. Continue reading
